Sheridan Web Design Grad Show
WHAT MAKES US <STRONG>
“Once again, I ask myself – is it that time already? Indeed it is.
And this year’s show is “stronger” than ever.
When I first met this talented group, I was just returning from a great sabbatical year. I was hungry for teaching again, but the idea of knuckling down to the routine and workload was daunting. Not really knowing what to expect, I cautiously opened the door to my first class…
Fast forward to today, as I reflect on what a fast, productive, and straight out fun year it has been. I have been so fortunate to have spent the past 8 months with the nicest group of people you can imagine.
When the class chose the name <STRONG> for their grad show, the first thing that crossed my mind was Nietzsche’s quote: “That which does not kill us makes us stronger.” It was followed closely by Kelly Clarkson’s version, which I now can’t stop singing in my head. I’m sure that there have been times over the past 8 months that just such a thought has crossed the students’ minds too. It could be the unofficial motto of the Web Design program – with its gruelling pace, sometimes brutal workload and inevitably life changing outcomes.
This is a <STRONG> class and I’ve seen their strength manifested in many ways, everyday.
There is strength in their commitment to learning, to hitting milestones and to having fun when those deadlines have been achieved.
It takes strength to go ‘back to the drawing board’ again (and again), to code a page when you are not a coder, and to do your own illustrations when you are not an illustrator.
There is clearly strength in students who have travelled across the world, across Canada or simply across town in terrible winter weather just to be in this program.
And there is strength in the whole that comes from all its parts; from collaboration and from what they have taught each other – and me.
Honestly – they’ve made me stronger. I hope you’ll be able to join us at the grad show. And maybe you’ll find that one person who will make your team stronger too.”
