Startoon is an online talent show designed to connect to creators and find new, original animated characters that could star in a series for kids aged 6 to 11. Startoon will be teaming up with Andy to make a brand new mini-pilot with a $25,000 production budget. Read More
On Friday Oct 7, the theme for the 14th annual 24 HOURS Animation Contest for Students was announced as Walls. Keeping in mind that walls can be both metaphorical and physical, students were challenged with creating a 30 second animated film that includes a wall in one form or another.
Students from around the world worked in teams of 5 to complete a 30 second animated film from scratch. The competition set a new record this year with over 690 students participating from 29 schools from around the world. The final works were reviewed by a panel of industry artists. Since 1981, Craft Ontario has awarded their prestigious Craft Awards to recipients who have proven to be accomplished and dedicated practitioners in the field of craft and design. From makers that create innovative and exceptional work to curators, administrators, writers and volunteers who support the craft community, each recipient is recognized as an important contributor to contemporary craft practice. The program assists makers in various stages of their careers through professional recognition, as well as financial support for further training, studio development and supplies. This year, as part of their 40th anniversary celebration, Craft Ontario hosted an exhibition of recipient work that was on view at the John B. Aird Gallery. During the Ceremony, twenty outstanding recipients we awarded over $32,000. Read More

Congratulations to Sheridan’s Craft and Design Glass studio on hosting another successful Glass Gathering conference.
Now in its fourth year, Glass Gathering was initiated after various discussions on how Sheridan could support the glass community and glass studio graduates. On Saturday, September 10, the glass studio at Trafalgar Campus welcomed over 150 people to a day filled with lectures and panel discussions, hot shop, flame working and kiln casting demonstrations. Summer is the time to tour our campuses. In July, the Faculty of Animation, Art and Design welcomed two groups of visitors from Shanghai to Sheridan. Composed of thirty Masters and Phd students from Shanghai University, China, the first group travelled overseas for a tour of Trafalgar Campus and SIRT (Strategic Partnerships & Screen Industries Research and Training Centre) to learn about the Canadian landscape of film and production. Maija Saari, Associate Dean of Film, Television and Journalism, led students through Sheridan’s facilities to demonstrate why we are a renowned member in the film, television and journalism industry. Thirty-two students from Sheridan have been announced as semifinalists in this year’s Adobe Design Achievement Awards (ADAA) competition. Since the competition began in 2001, more than 35,000 students across 76 countries have been involved. Now in its sixteenth year, the ADAA is open to student graphic designers, photographers, illustrators, animators, digital filmmakers, developers and computer artists from selected higher education institutions. A new mural has just been unveiled in the Illustration Wing of Trafalgar Campus. Crossing Paths is the collaborative effort of illustration students Jude Labuca, Sadie Marfisi, Natalie Nehlawi Kimberlyn Porter, and Bailie Rosenlund under the supervision and guidance of Illustration faculty Joe Morse and Ted Zourntos. The OEADF (Ontario Educators in Art and Design Foundation) is an organization of teachers and educators in the foundation programs from collages all over the province. Based off of the FATE (Foundations in Art: Theory and Education) association in the United States, each year the OEADF meets at a different collage to share in the goal of making the foundational experience in art a solid springboard for a successful academic and professional life. This year, Peter Palermo, Coordinator for Sheridan’s Art Fundamentals program led the group as acting chair. A number of topics discussed this year at Niagara-on-the-lake College including strategies for engaging students, services for students with learning disabilities/ medical challenges, and organizational structure. The gathering also consisted of a tour of the Niagara region’s wineries followed by a tasting. Read More
