Sheridan graduates win big at 43rd Annie Awards

The 43rd annual Annie Awards, honouring the year’s best achievements in the field of animation and sponsored by the International Animated Film Society (ASIFA-Hollywood) were presented on Saturday, February 6, 2016 at Royce Hall at the University of California in Los Angeles. Eleven Sheridan grads and one current student were nominated for awards, and all were in attendance together with President Jeff Zabudsky and Bachelor of Animation Associate Dean Angela Stukator.

tumblr_o1pd2rnyIK1rdolzfo1_1280 Top award went to Sheridan Animation alumnus Taha Neyestani in the prestigious Best Student Film category for his short ed. The film is based on Sheridan’s figure and art model Edward Czuchnicki, popularly known as Ed Cz, who in Neyestani’s film acts out his inner world when he steps on the stage. Two other Sheridan films were nominated for awards: Melody Wang for the Casbeook of Nips and Porkington and Stephanie Chiew, Joan Chung, David Du, Matthew Fazari, Ana Gomez, Rui Hao, Jessica Jing, Seeyun Lee, Nick Nason and Danny Wang for Mother, done as a third year Animation group film. Neyestani and Wang had their short films highlighted in the Toronto Film Festival’s (TIFF) Canada’s top 10 Film Festival event on January 8, 2016.

The other Sheridan alumni who received awards were Alison Rutland (Computer Animation, 2003) for Outstanding Achievement, Character Animation in a Feature Production  for the critically acclaimed film Inside Out (Pixar Animation Studios). Going into the awards, Inside Out led with 14 nominations, more than any other film, and it won in 10 categories including best animated feature. Alexander Poei (Art Fundamentals, 1996 & Classical Animation, 1999) was part of a team that received the award for Outstanding Achievement, Character Animation in a Live Action Production for The Revenant.

Poei, Rutland and Neyestani were among a total of 11 Sheridan College Bachelor of Animation graduates to receive nominations as part of the 43rd Annual Annie Awards.
